Things to Consider When Wearing a Strapless Wedding Dress

strapless wedding dressThe strapless wedding dress is one of the more popular wedding dress styles that brides choose to wear. Strapless wedding dresses are fashionable and sexy and can easily be worn with a shawl or jacket. The downside of wearing a strapless wedding dress is keeping it up. If you are not used to wearing strapless dresses of any kind, there are a few things you should consider before buying a strapless wedding dress.

Probably the biggest complaint from brides who have worn strapless wedding gowns is that they spent most of their wedding day hiking up the dress. As the name states, a strapless wedding dress has not straps so there is nothing holding the dress up aside from the tight upper portion of the dress clinging to the body. A poorly fitted gown will slide down during the day. If someone accidentally steps on skirt, the dress is coming down. This is the stuff of nightmares. So, to avoid a potentially and extremely embarrassing moment, you will want to make sure your strapless wedding dress remains up. Here are a few gravity defying tips and tricks.

First and foremost, make sure that the upper portion of the wedding gown is snug and well fitted. Some strapless wedding dresses have a structured bodice while others are a fluid dress that incorporates an elasticized neckline. Either way, you will want to try the strapless wedding dress on, in the presence of a seamstress or tailor who can expertly measure and then alter the dress so that it perfectly fits your body. Your seamstress might need to alter your dress, which takes time, so do this well before your wedding day.

A narrow and snug waist will also stop the dress from sliding down. If the waist is loose, have your seamstress alter it if she can without affecting the overall appearance of the dress.

The bra you select will play a part in how well the dress stays up. A strapless bra that fits well and provides great is critical if you are wearing a strapless dress. A long line, corset (full bustier) type bra that runs from hip to bust is your best bet since a regular strapless bra will probably not hold up dress up. Have your seamstress sewing a hook on each side of the dress and an eye on each side of bra so that the dress can be hooked directly to the bra. Alternatively, your seamstress can sew the bra directly to the dress. Either way, the dress will be well supported throughout the day.

If you do not attach the bra to the dress using either hook and eyes or sewing directly to the dress, consider using fashion tape or toupee tape. Both are double-sided tapes to adhere the dress directly to your skin or to your bra. Fashion tape is sold online but can also be purchased at Bed, Bath & Beyond, Target and other department stores.  Just sure to test the tape first if planning to adhere directly to your skin to make sure you are not sensitive and will not get irritated.

Because of the popularity of strapless wedding dresses, they can be found in many colors and styles; you can find a strapless in the classic white and ivory wedding dress, even to black wedding dresses, a red wedding dress and lace wedding dresses. The strapless wedding dress neckline is usually a scoop, sweet heart, or straight cut; all of which will highlight your curves and bust line. As with any dress, you want accentuate your assets while drawing attention away from problematic body parts. Aside from making sure the dress stays up all day, there are also a few other things to keep in mind when wearing a strapless wedding dress.

Your arms are accentuated when wearing a strapless wedding dress. For a flawless look, you will want to get your arms in shape before the wedding day. If your arms are plump or thin, both will look good with definition to them. Look into exercise programs designed to tone and shape the arms.

The area above your breast will be bare when wearing a strapless wedding dress. Eye catching wedding bridal jewelry to adorn this “bare spot” becomes all the more important. Select a necklace that will highlight your personality while also highlighting the ensemble and the entire wedding theme.
